Science

PASSJ believes in the connection between the Science classroom and the world. The students study historical context, current issues and future implications.

PASSJ provides a Science curriculum where the students learn to develop their scientific literacy through a broad spectrum of courses. It provides opportunities both for experimentation and the mastery of the content of Science, as well as an appreciation of the implications of Science in our everyday lives.

Scientific knowledge is dynamic and interdisciplinary in nature. Scientific thinking inspires a life long pursuit of curiosity and inquiry. In Science class, students build models, recognize patterns, and similarities. By incorporating effective traditional methods and utilizing the technology in teaching, the Science program at PASSJ guides students to be active and articulate learners. In addition to regular classroom activities, students work on projects that work as a link between real life and classroom experiences.

Mathematics

The Math program at PASSJ offers highly extensive and accelerated courses. The Math courses range from fractions and decimals to Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry and Calculus. The students of PASSJ are challenged daily on their abilities of reasoning, logic, problem solving and strategies.

We believe that Mathematical principles and concepts have become a part of almost every area of work and Science is the language of nature; without it we cannot communicate with the world, within us or outside. A good background in Science and Math enables students to quickly learn and understand how things around us work. Because of these aspects of Math and Science, we begin early to establish the foundations needed to encourage careers in the areas of math and science.

Students who excel in Mathematics are chosen to become members of the Math League. The members of this team work hard together in order to compete on the State and National levels.

Language Arts

The English program at PASSJ enables students to develop their reading, writing and listening skills.

An English class at PASSJ consists of Reading Comprehension, Creative Writing, Spelling, Vocabulary, Grammar, Poetry, Independent and Group Reading. Additionally, challenging books are selected for the students in order to enhance their reading methods.

Social Studies

The Social Studies curriculum enables students to experience history, culture and geography. Through various classroom projects and activities, students become familiar with American, European and Asian history.

By learning about ancient civilizations and global issues, the students are able to participate in class discussions and debates where they share their own opinions and worldviews.

Technology

Pioneer Academy of Science - South Jersey is equipped with a modern computer lab with internet access. PASSJ offers Computer courses to all of its students.

This is the time of the digital revolution. Rather than being an add-on, computer technology is integrated into the classrooms, with computer-assisted learning included where effective. All students have opportunities to become aware of the availability of and utilize various types of current and newly emerging technology throughout the curriculum, including video, audio media and computer software. Students in grades 3 through 8 have computer instruction in a state of the art computer laboratory. Students in our program use computers extensively from interactive learning to research, email, web design, and online homework.

The students become familiar with computers and the technology they offer. In this way, students grow accustomed to the internet, build up excellent typing skills, and develop their proficiency in software and web design

The Arts

Art and Music are essential to the PASSJ curriculum. The Arts provide greater communication and imagination abilities for our students. Each year, the students take part in competitions, productions and performances. Private lessons in voice and instruments can be taken after school.

Visual and performing arts play a key role throughout the curriculum. The arts as well as other disciplines, language arts, history, and social studies help provide an effective avenue for the study of science and mathematics. The arts curriculum helps students develop their creativity, as well as the ability to communicate with other people through visual images and put on shows.

Physical Education

PASSJ understands the importance of Physical Education; therefore, all grades are exposed to physical fitness classes. All students participate in both team and individual activities.
